"Latin America is the region of open veins. Everything, from the discovery until our times, has always been transmuted into European -or later United States- capital, and as such has accumulated in distant centers of power
the history of Latin America's underdevelopment is, as someone has said, an integral part of the history of world's capitalism development. Our defeat was always implicit in the victory of others; our wealth has always granted our poverty by nourishing the prosperity of others"
Eduardo Galeano, Open Veins of Latin America
"As if to illustrate the totalitarion nature of colonial exploitation, the colonists turns the colonized into a kind of quintessence of evil. The "native" is declared impervious to ethics, representing not only the absence of values but also the negation of values. He is, dare we say it, the enemy of values. In other words, absolute evil."
Frantz Fanon, The Wretched of the Earth

a grotesque commercialization of everything Hawaiian has damaged Hawaiians psychologically, reducing our ability to control our lands and waters, our daily lives, and the expression and integrity of our culture.
We suffered a unilateral redefinition of our homeland and our people, a displacement and a disposesion in our own country. In familial terms, our mother (and thus our heritage and inheritance) was taken from us. We were orphaned on our own land.
Huanani-Kay Trask, From a Native Daughter
